Donna was always a blues fan and listened to artists such as Etta James, Muddy Waters, BB King, Memphis Minnie, Eric Clapton and Bonnie Raitt to name but a few. It wasn’t until Donna started working in JJ Smyths as a “singing” barmaid that Blues music really had an impact on her overall style as a musician. JJs was a live music establishment in Dublin for Jazz and Blues that ran for over thirty years. This is where many a musician got their start and where many of the top names in Ireland and around the world played.
Unfortunately JJ’s closed in April 2017 and with that the manager Brian Smyth passed away shorty after. Brian was not only Donna’s employer but he was a friend for life. He encouraged Donna to never give up on her music career and was like a proud brother whenever she would perform.
